Stag and hen parties in the Ardèche: organising a canoe day in the gorges
- Canyoning
- Via ferrata
- Caving
- A wide range of outdoor activities is available.
Yet canoeing holds a special place among them. It’s the activity that leaves the most room for fun, laughter, and shared moments, without sacrificing either the scenery or the thrill of adventure.
This guide is for the person in charge of organising the event : the friend tasked with finding a memorable idea that’s easy to arrange and suitable for the whole group.
Here’s everything you need to know to plan a successful stag or hen party canoe trip in the Ardèche gorges.
Why choose a canoe trip for a stag or hen party?
Canoeing is social where canyoning is serious
For a stag or hen party, the group dynamic matters just as much as the activity itself.
- Canyoning is a series of technical obstacles that everyone tackles individually: the guide in front, participants following behind, with little room for socialising.
- Canoeing is the opposite:
- You paddle in pairs
- You chat along the way
- You argue playfully about the best route
- You splash each other
- You stop whenever and wherever you like
- Breaks take place on pebble beaches
- Everyone gathers in the same spot
- These are the moments people are still talking about on the wedding day
A setting no one forgets
- Paddling beneath the Pont d’Arc
- Gliding past towering cliffs rising hundreds of metres above the river
- Finding a secluded beach for a lunchtime aperitif
And unlike a weekend in the city, everyone disconnects: no signal, no notifications, just the group and the river.
Suitable for every type of participant
A stag or hen party often brings together people with very different levels of fitness and sporting ability.
Canoeing doesn't create a physical hierarchy:
- The natural current of the Ardèche helps carry the boats downstream
- People who do little or no regular sport can keep up comfortably alongside the more athletic members of the group
- The free introduction session before departure is all most participants need to get started
That makes canoeing one of the few outdoor activities that genuinely allows everyone to take part and enjoy the experience together.
How to make the day truly memorable and fun
Lunch and drinks on the beach: the highlight of the day
- On both half-day and full-day routes, your group is free to choose where to stop along the river.
- The Ardèche Gorges are home to numerous pebble beaches that can only be reached by water : no roads, no crowds, just your group surrounded by nature.
- It’s the perfect place to unpack a picnic, share a drink, and enjoy the incredible setting.
For a stag or hen party, it’s worth planning this break in advance:
- Bring a waterproof bag for each person to carry drinks and food
- Pack a surprise for the bride- or groom-to-be:
- A bottle of champagne
- A waterproof card game
- A fun costume accessory to reveal during the break
Costumes: what works on the water
Yes, costumes are perfectly possible on a canoe trip, with a few practical adjustments.
Good options include:
- Synthetic-fabric tutus
- Lightweight wigs secured with a headband
- Personalised T-shirts
- Colourful armbands and fun accessories
Avoid:
- Bulky cotton costumes (they absorb water and become heavy)
- Fragile accessories or anything that could obstruct your vision
- In general, assume that anything taken onto the water will get wet at some point
The best costumes are simple, lightweight, and comfortable enough to paddle in while still bringing plenty of laughs to the day.
Photos and memories: plan ahead for your phone
- There’s no mobile signal in the Ardèche Gorges, but there will be plenty of photo opportunities.
- Bring a waterproof phone pouch or protective case.
- Waterproof cameras such as a GoPro or an Olympus TG are ideal for capturing rapids, swimming stops, and action shots from the water.
- Designate one person as the group's photographer: either someone who tends to stay a little drier to protect the equipment, or someone willing to risk taking a swim with the camera.
The best photos are often taken from the middle of the river : under the Pont d’Arc, in the rapids, or during a beach stop with the whole group together.
Choosing the right option for your stag or hen party group
The choice of route mainly depends on two factors:
- The amount of time available in your schedule
- The fitness level and experience of your group
Finding the right balance between these two elements will help ensure that everyone enjoys the day, from the most adventurous participants to those simply looking to relax and have fun on the river.
- 7 km half-day trip
- 1.5 to 2 hours on the water
- Ideal if canoeing is just one activity among others during the day (lunch, drinks, evening celebrations, etc.)
- 12 km half-day trip
- 2.5 to 3 hours on the water
- The best balance: long enough to enjoy the Ardèche Gorges, yet short enough to save energy for the evening festivities
- 24 km full-day trip
- 5 to 7 hours on the water
- Perfect for groups who want canoeing to be the highlight of their stay
- Includes plenty of time for a beach picnic and swimming stops
- A memorable day guaranteed
For most stag and hen parties, the 12 km route is the ideal option:
- You get to experience the Ardèche gorges properly
- There’s plenty of time for a relaxing stop on a riverside beach
- Everyone is back in time and ready for the evening celebrations
Planning your trip
What to plan ahead ?
- Book early: weekends in June and September fill up fast with stag and hen groups. In July and August, book several weeks ahead, especially for Saturdays.
- Send us your group list: let Aventure Canoës know the number of people, their ages, and whether anyone in the group is a weak swimmer (this is essential, please don't leave it out).
- Sort out your transport: Vallon-Pont-d'Arc is 3 hours from Lyon, 3.5 hours from Marseille, and 3 hours from Montpellier. For groups, a minibus or organised car-pooling keeps everyone on time for departure.
- Dry bags for food, drinks and phones: there are no lockers on the beaches along the gorge, but we provide watertight barrels !
- What to wear:
- Swimwear
- A synthetic or lycra top
- Closed-toe shoes (no flip-flops)
- Everything you wear will get wet, so pack your evening clothes separately in a bag left in the vehicle.
- Return shuttle included: Aventure Canoës brings you back to your starting point at the end of the trip : no need to arrange a second car.
FAQ : frequently asked questions
Can we bring alcohol on the water for a stag or hen do?
- Yes : a beer or a glass of rosé during the beach stop is all part of the experience.
- That said, paddling while drunk is dangerous and not allowed: we reserve the right to turn away anyone who is clearly intoxicated.
- The idea is to save the drinks for the stop on shore, not for the rapids.
- And honestly, a lively picnic on a wild beach in the heart of the gorges is far more fun than a drink in the canoe anyway.
When is the best time for a canoe stag or hen do in the Ardèche?
- June and September are the best months:
- Pleasant temperatures (25–30°C)
- Comfortable water temperature
- Quieter gorges than at the height of summer
- July and August are still great for that summer holiday feel and plenty of swimming, but the gorges are busier and group slots get booked up early.
- May is possible, but the water can still be chilly : bring wetsuits.

Does the bride or groom-to-be pay for their place?
- At Aventure Canoës, our rates apply to the whole group.
- See our rates
- If you'd like to treat the guest of honour to their place, it's up to the organiser to factor it into the group budget : that's usually how friends sort it out between themselves.
- Get in touch if you have any questions about group rates.
Can we combine the canoe trip with another activity on the same day?
- Yes : and it's exactly what most stag and hen groups do: canoeing in the morning or afternoon, with another activity or a celebratory meal around it.
- The 7 km or 12 km route leaves plenty of time to follow up with an evening on a terrace in Vallon-Pont-d'Arc, an Ardèche wine tasting, or a group barbecue.
- The 24 km route takes up the whole day: it's better suited to two-day trips where canoeing is the main event of one of the days.
Can complete beginners join a canoe stag or hen do?
- Yes. No previous experience is needed on the 7 km and 12 km routes.
- Aventure Canoës offers a free 10-to-15-minute introduction before you set off. That's enough to get the basics down and head out with confidence.
- Stag and hen groups often bring together all sorts of abilities, and that's exactly what makes the day so good: the more confident paddlers help the others, and the whole group reaches the finish together.
