Guided canoe trips in the Ardèche: qualified supervision from age 4
- Passing under the Pont d'Arc
- Gliding along the gorge cliffs without taking the slightest risk.
The guided trip is made for exactly this. It's also the only option legally permitted for children under 7 on whitewater.
At Aventure Canoës, our state-qualified instructors lead two routes: the 7 km and the 12 km. These two trips make up almost all of our guided bookings, because they match what families, school groups and corporate groups are really looking for.
7 km or 12 km with an instructor: how to choose?
- Both guided routes are accessible with no previous experience.
- The difference comes down to the duration, the age of the participants and what you want to experience on the water.

Our two guided trips
7 km: The Little Adventure with an instructor (Salavas → Châmes)
Ideal for: children from age 4 • beginners • anyone not at ease in the water • discovering the Pont d'Arc- Duration:
- ~1.5 hrs of paddling
- Departures: 10am–1pm • 2pm–5pm • 4pm–7pm
- Level: all levels
- Minimum age: 4 with an instructor (7 without supervision)
- Highlights:
- Passing under the Pont d'Arc
- The Charlemagne rapid
- Commentary on the gorges' wildlife and plant life
- Departure: directly from the Salavas launch point : no transfer
The 7 km is the go-to trip for families with young children.
- The departure is directly from our base in Salavas: no transfer, no waiting.
- The instructor takes charge of each participant right from the safety briefing, adjusts the life jackets one by one, and decides the seating in the canoes according to each person's profile.
- On the water:
- They go first through the Charlemagne rapid
- Show the line to follow
- Stay with every boat.
The passage under the Pont d'Arc is explained on the spot: how the arch formed over 124,000 years through a meander cut-off, and the history of the site, now a national nature reserve.
It's the same place everyone photographs from the road, but seen from the water, with someone to tell its story, it's a completely different experience.
12 km: The Signature Adventure with an instructor (Sampzon → Châmes)
Ideal for: school groups • holiday camps and activity centres • corporate groups • families with children aged 7 and over- Duration: ~3 hrs of paddling
- Departure: 9am – back at 3pm
- Level: easy
- Minibus transfer included to Sampzon
- Highlights:
- 4 chutes
- Passing under the Pont d'Arc
- Full commentary on the gorges
The 12 km starts with a minibus transfer to Sampzon, 5 km upstream.
- This first calm section serves as a warm-up.
- The instructor uses it to:
- Correct your paddling posture
- Explain how to read the current
- Get the group ready for the more technical passages ahead
- The instructor takes you through them one at a time, boat by boat, with no chaotic queuing.
- The route then joins that of the 7 km:
- The Charlemagne rapid
- The commentated passage under the Pont d'Arc
- Swimming stops depending on the group's pace
It's the format most often chosen for school outings, corporate groups and team-building days looking for a structured one-day programme.
The other trips available with an instructor
Beyond the 7 km and 12 km, three other routes are also offered with state-qualified instructor supervision.
They suit more specific profiles:

For experienced or sporty groups wanting to experience the full crossing of the gorges over two days with qualified supervision.
What your instructor actually does: before, during and after
- The difference between a guided trip and an independent one isn't limited to safety.
- It comes down to what happens throughout the day, in details that only those who know the river well would notice.
Before departure
- Individual safety briefing: the instructor takes the time to assess each participant's level before getting on the water.
- Checking and adjusting every life jacket: a poorly fastened jacket won't turn a child onto their back in the event of a fall.
- Strategic seating in the canoes: those least at ease are placed in the middle of the boat, never at the back.
- Free introduction offered for those who have never held a paddle.
On the water
- Reading the current in real time: the instructor anticipates areas of turbulence and guides the group before the difficulty is even visible.
- Systematically announcing rapids 50 metres ahead, demonstrating the line and going through first.
- Constantly adapting the pace to the actual group, not to a pre-set timetable.
- Technical correction of your paddling to improve control and reduce fatigue.
- Managing the swimming breaks: choosing current-free areas and keeping active watch during swims.
The commentated tour of the gorges
Our instructors know the Ardèche by heart : not from the tourist signs, but from years spent on this river. During the trip, they share:
- How the Pont d'Arc formed: how a bend in the river carved through the limestone over 124,000 years to create the largest natural arch in France.
- The species found in the gorges:
- The kingfisher skimming the water in a flash of metallic blue.
- Bonelli's eagle, which nests in the limestone cliffs and is recognisable by its 1.8 m wingspan.
- The beavers, whose traces remain on the banks.
- The prehistoric history of the gorges: the Chauvet cave, discovered a few kilometres away, is home to the oldest rock paintings in the world. The people who painted them knew this canyon.
- The secrets of the cliffs: the overhangs, the accessible caves, the natural beaches that only paddlers reach.
The Brevet d'État: what this qualification actually changes
Many operators mention a "qualified instructor" without specifying which qualification they mean.
Yet the distinction has a direct bearing on your safety and on what is legally permitted. The Brevet d'État d'éducateur sportif in canoe-kayak is the only qualification that authorises the supervision of children under 7 on whitewater.
There is no legal equivalent below it: a mere guide, a youth-activities leader (BAFA) or an unqualified helper cannot legally take charge of a group with children under 7 on the Ardèche.
- A minimum of 400 hours of training covering paddling technique, reading the river, group management and whitewater rescue techniques.
- Compulsory first-aid certification, kept up to date.
- In-depth knowledge of the regulations specific to the Gorges de l'Ardèche nature reserve.
- Professional liability engaged: the state-qualified instructor is personally responsible for the group's safety.
This is not an entry-level seasonal job.
Who is the guided trip for?
- You have a child under 7: the presence of a state-qualified instructor is compulsory under a prefectoral order.
- You're organising an outing for a school group, a holiday camp, an activity centre or a care home.
- You're not at ease in the water and want to paddle stress-free, with someone to handle the unexpected.
- You'd like a proper commentated tour of the gorges: wildlife, plant life, geology, history : not just a trip downriver.
- You're organising a corporate group or a team-building day and want a structured programme.
- You're trying canoeing for the first time and would rather learn with a professional.
How to prepare for your outing?

Frequently asked questions
My child is under 7: can they do the Ardèche canoe trip?
- Yes, from age 4, provided the trip is supervised by a state-qualified instructor (Brevet d'État).
- It's also a legal requirement: a prefectoral order prohibits children under 7 from doing the Ardèche independently.
- The recommended route is the 7 km:
- A manageable duration
- A direct departure from the base
- Passing under the Pont d'Arc included.
- The instructor stays close at hand throughout the trip.
What's the difference between a state-qualified instructor and a mere guide?
- The Brevet d'État (BE) is the only state qualification that authorises the supervision of children under 7 on whitewater.
- A guide or helper without the BE cannot legally take charge of a group including under-7s on the Ardèche.
- The BE involves a minimum of 400 hours of training, first-aid certification and in-depth knowledge of whitewater rescue techniques.
- At Aventure Canoës, all our instructors hold the BE.
What are the departure times for the guided trips?
- For the 7 km: three slots
- 10am–1pm
- 2pm–5pm
- 4pm–7pm
- For the 12 km: a single departure at 9am, returning around 3pm.
- Booking ahead is strongly advised, especially in July and August when the guided slots go quickly.
- For groups (school classes, corporate groups, holiday camps), the slots can be adapted : contact us directly.
How many canoes can a single instructor supervise?
- The regulations set a maximum supervision ratio depending on the type of group and the paddling conditions.
- On our 7 and 12 km trips, our instructors handle manageable group sizes to keep the supervision real rather than token.
- For large groups (more than 10 canoes), we always provide two instructors.
- Contact us for any group request.
Can you book a guided trip for a school group or a corporate group?
- Yes. Guided outings for school groups, holiday camps, youth clubs, corporate groups and associations are one of our most popular formats.
- We adapt the number of instructors to the group.
- We plan the timings and shuttles accordingly.
- For any group of more than 10 people, contact Aventure Canoës directly for a free quote and a tailored arrangement.
Does the instructor significantly increase the price of the trip?
- The guided trip is offered at a slightly higher price than the independent trip, which is unavoidable for professional supervision.
- For families with children under 7, it's compulsory in any case.
- For everyone else, set that supplement against the cost of the day: you're paying for a technical introduction, a commentated tour of the gorges and professional safety.
- The rates are available in the table above.
