Canoeing the Ardèche as a couple: a romantic outing in the gorges
Here's which route to choose when there are two of you, the one we really recommend, and what you need to know before setting off.
Why is canoeing a good idea for an outing for two?
There's no shortage of activities to do in the Ardèche as a couple. Canoeing has an advantage the others don't: you're in the same boat, making headway together. You need a minimum of coordination, to find your rhythm, and it comes naturally after a few strokes of the paddle.
It's an outdoor activity with no competition, no performance to deliver. The current does a good part of the work; you just follow the river, stop when you feel like it and set off again whenever you want.
There's no need to be sporty or to have paddled before: a beginner couple manages just fine, as long as they choose the right route.
Which route to choose when there are two of you?
It's the decision that makes all the difference, and it's where most couples go wrong. With us, each trip has its own course and its own distance, and two things really matter for two people: the time on the water, and whether or not you pass under the Pont d'Arc.
The classic trap: aiming for too long. The Super Adventure of 31 km is nearly 7 hours of paddling. For a couple, especially if one of you is a beginner, fatigue soon takes over from pleasure. And be careful, some trips don't pass under the Pont d'Arc: the Mini Toboggan sets off upstream of our base, and the 24 km Grand Adventure starts after the arch.

What to expect from the Signature Adventure, our trip for couples
Here's how the route we recommend most often to couples plays out.
Nothing made up: it's what you experience over the 12 km to Châmes.
- Minibus transfer upstream: coffee and a free introduction at the base, then we drop you at a put-in 5 km further up.
- A very calm first stretch: perfect for finding your feet together before what's to come.
- The 4 water slides: purpose-built chutes to take on in the canoe, the most fun part of the trip.
- The passage under the Pont d'Arc: the natural arch, the highlight of the trip. Set off early to have it in peace.
- Beaches, swimming and arrival at Châmes: breaks with no time limit, then a minibus back every hour until 6 pm.
Fancy going further? On the long routes (24 or 31 km) and the bivouac, you enter the nature reserve and reach the most spectacular passages of the gorges, such as the Cirque de la Madeleine.
Our tips for a successful trip
A trip for two takes a bit of preparation. Here are the things we repeat most often, because we see the same oversights every summer.
In the reserve, you can't stop wherever you like
- On the long routes that cross the nature reserve, stops are only allowed on the marked beaches. That's what protects the wildlife and the plant life.
- Spot your picnic beach in advance rather than pulling in just anywhere.
Do you need to be sporty or know how to swim?
- Being able to swim is compulsory, it's the only real condition, and independent access is from age 7.
- No particular fitness is needed for a half-day: the current does most of the work.
- If you're a beginner and want reassurance, the trip with an instructor removes any last hesitation.
The sunburn no one sees coming
- On the water, you don't feel the heat, and you come out with your thighs and the tops of your feet burnt.
- Sun cream, a cap, closed shoes and plenty of water: that's what's most often forgotten.
Your checklist before setting off:
- Swimwear and a change of clothes
- Closed shoes that stay on your feet
- Sun cream and a cap
- Plenty of water
- A picnic in a watertight barrel
- Phone in a waterproof pouch
- Weather and water level checked the day before
When to go?
- The season runs from spring to autumn, and the time of day matters as much as the period.
- Set off early in the morning: the river is calmer, it's cooler, and you pass the Pont d'Arc before the crowds.
- A couple putting in at 9 am has a completely different trip from one setting off at 2 pm at the height of the crowds.
- June and September offer the best compromise between pleasant water and reduced numbers.
- To fine-tune, our guide «when to go canoeing in the Ardèche» details each month.
- You can also check our tool, Canoë Malin, to see how busy it's expected to be day by day and aim for a quiet slot.
- And if the weather turns, the region has plenty to offer: caves, characterful villages and good places to eat.
Extending the outing over a weekend
- If you have the time, the trip slots nicely into a weekend. After the day on the water, a night in a cabin or in quirky accommodation a few minutes from the river lets you extend things without heading straight home.
- That's also the idea behind the two-day trip with a bivouac, where you sleep by the water between two stretches.
- For the evening, Vallon-Pont-d'Arc and its surroundings have terraces and good places to eat. To put together the rest of your stay, take a look at our ideas on "what to do in Vallon-Pont-d'Arc".
- The trip remains the highlight; the rest comes around it.
