What is the minimum age to canoe on the Ardèche?

The Ardèche is one of the few rivers in France to offer family canoe trips, open from a very young age.

From age 4: the guided trip with an instructor

From age 4, children can do the trip supervised by a state-qualified instructor. This format is designed for the youngest and for families who aren't at ease on the water. The instructor sets the pace of the boat, secures the tricky sections and turns the outing into a fun, relaxed moment close to nature.

From age 7: free family paddling

From age 7, and provided they can swim, children can canoe without a certified guide and paddle freely with their parents in a family canoe. It's the ideal age to start paddling actively, to build confidence on the water and enjoy the open nature. The half-day routes are perfectly suited to this age group.

Pre-teens and teens can take on the full-day trips. The day routes let you discover the gorges in full, with manageable rapids and swimming breaks. The two-day trips with camping are also possible for the most motivated, from age 12.

The Mini Toboggan Adventure: ideal from age 7

It's the mini trip best suited to families with young children. Slides, a paddle through calm water and memories guaranteed. The length is perfect for a discovery half-day with children who don't yet have the stamina to paddle for long.

The Little Adventure (7 km) and the Signature Adventure (12 km): for 8-11s

These are everyone's favourites: three rapids, the passage under the Pont d'Arc, some current and real thrills for children who want more than a gentle paddle. These routes are an excellent first real adventure on the river, always as a half-day. The Signature Adventure's little extra: it also has the 4 slides!

The Grand Adventure and the Super Adventure: for age 10 and up

These day routes cross the Ardèche gorges. They offer kilometres of wild nature, manageable rapids and beaches to picnic on. Families with children aged at least 10 find the perfect balance between effort and relaxation here.

Child safety on the Ardèche: what you need to know

Your children's safety is our absolute priority. Here are the key points to know before you go:

• The life jacket is mandatory for everyone and provided on site, including in child sizes.
• Being able to swim is an absolute condition to paddle freely from age 7.
• A state-qualified instructor is mandatory for under-7s.
• A full safety briefing is given before every departure.
• The canoes used at Aventure Canoës are made locally in the Ardèche by specialist craftsmen. They are safe, stable and family-friendly.
• A waterproof barrel is provided to protect your things and your picnic.

Our practical tips for a successful trip with children

Choosing the right time of day

Set off early in the morning, ideally before 9.30am! In July-August, the river is calmer, the temperatures more bearable for young children, and you'll have more time to enjoy the swimming breaks without watching the clock.

Getting the logistics right

Remember to bring:

• water-resistant sun cream
• shoes that stay on the feet
• plenty of water
• a picnic in the waterproof barrel provided

Come straight to the Aventure Canoës base at Salavas:

• Free, shaded private car park
• Private beach to enjoy before or after your trip
• A small shop with drinks, snacks and basic kit in case you forget something

Anticipating the children's level

Don't underestimate the physical tiredness: a half-day is plenty for children aged 7 to 9 who have never paddled. Better to finish on a good note than to wear them out on a route that's too long.

Our tip: put the children at the front of the canoe so they paddle without really straining. They feel useful and active, but it's the adult at the back who really steers the boat.
