Canoeing in the Ardèche with children: what age, what route?
Are you planning a family holiday in the Ardèche and wondering whether your children can do the river by canoe? The answer is yes: canoeing in the Ardèche with children is the must-do outdoor, nature activity of Ardèche tourism.
A successful canoe trip with children takes some preparation: choosing the right route, the equipment, the pace… a few simple habits make all the difference.
Here's everything you need to know before booking.
What's the minimum age for canoeing on the Ardèche?
From age 4: the guided trip with an instructor
Children, from the age of 4, can do the trip supervised by a state-qualified instructor.
- This option is designed for little ones and for families not at ease on the water.
- The instructor adapts the boat's pace, makes the tricky passages safe and turns your canoe-kayak outing on the Ardèche into a moment of fun and relaxation as close to nature as it gets.
Practical tip: for children under 7, the guided trip is compulsory. Book this option ahead, places go quickly in July and August.
From age 7: independent family paddling
From the age of 7, and provided they can swim, children can canoe without a certified guide and paddle freely with their parents in a family canoe.
- It's the ideal age to start paddling actively, to build confidence on the water and to enjoy the great outdoors.
- The half-day canoe routes through the gorges are perfectly calibrated for this age group.
From age 10 -12: all the routes are open
Pre-teens and teenagers can take on the full-day trips.
- The one-day routes let you discover the gorges in their entirety, with accessible rapids and swimming breaks.
- The two-day routes with a bivouac are also an option for the most motivated, from age 12.
Which route to choose based on your children's age ?
The Mini Adventure: Water Slides, from age 7
It's the mini trip best suited to families with young children.
- Water slides, a paddle along calm water, and memories guaranteed.
- The duration is perfect for a half-day taster with children who don't yet have the stamina to paddle for long.
The Little Adventure (7 km) and the Signature Adventure (12 km): for ages 8–11
These getaways are everyone's favourites: three rapids, the passage under the Pont d'Arc, plenty of current and real thrills for children who want more than a gentle paddle.
- These routes make for an excellent first real adventure on the river, still in a half-day.
- The little extra of the Signature Adventure: it also features the 4 water slides!
The Grand Adventure and the Super Adventure: for ages 10 and up
These full-day routes cross the Ardèche gorges.
- They offer kilometres of unspoilt nature, accessible rapids and beaches for a picnic.
- Families with children aged 10 and over will find the perfect balance here between effort and relaxation.
The 2-day trip with bivouac: for adventurous teens (12+)
A night under the stars in the heart of the nature reserve:
- Two days of paddling and freedom: the experience that makes a holiday memorable for years to come.
- This format is an option with motivated, physically fit teenagers.

Our practical tips for a successful trip with children
Choosing the right time of day
Set off early in the morning, ideally before 9:30!
In July and August, the river is calmer, the temperatures more bearable for young children, and you'll have more time to enjoy the swimming breaks without watching the clock.
Getting the logistics right
Remember to bring:
- Water-resistant sun cream
- Shoes that fasten to your feet
- Plenty of water
- A picnic in the watertight barrel provided
Come straight to the Aventure Canoës watersports base in Salavas:
- Free, shaded private car park
- A private beach to enjoy before or after your trip
- A small shop with drinks, snacks and bits of kit in case you've forgotten anything
No need to arrange a car for the return: our free shuttle brings everyone back to the Salavas base.
Anticipating the children's level
Don't underestimate the physical tiredness:
- A half-day is plenty for children aged 7 to 9 who have never paddled before.
- Better to finish on a high than to wear them out on a route that's too long.
Our tip: sit the children at the front of the canoe so they can paddle without really straining. They feel useful and active, but it's the adult at the back who really steers the boat.
